New Town is a planned area situated on the north-eastern periphery of Kolkata. It falls under North 24 Parganas district and is a part of New Town Kolkata Development Authority. A developing region, New Town is divided into three parts ? Action Area I, II and III. It comprises a blend of residential developments, commercial cum retail complexes, corporate parks and institutional entities. Prominent localities placed closer to New Town include Rajarhat, Kestopur, Salt Lake, Baguiati and Lake Town. Most of the residential projects here are multi-storey apartments such as NBCC Vibgyor, Hiland Willows, Bengal Peerless Anahita Complex, Tata Housing Avenida and Shapoorji Pallonji Shukho Brishti.

Physical infrastructure

New Town Road, Aliah University Road, Biswa Bangla Sarani Road (NH-12) and Rajarhat Main Road, are some of the important roads here. Public transportation is sufficiently available through buses, taxis, auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws. Moreover, the under-construction Line 6 or Yellow Line (New Garia-Airport Line), is expected to bring metro connectivity in this area tentatively by 2021. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is placed about 12 km from here and can be accessed within half an hour.

Social & retail infra

Some of the prime educational institutions in New Town are DPS, The Newtown School, Techno International, Narayana School and Aliah University. Notable healthcare facilities in the region comprise Ohio Hospital, Tata Medical Centre, Sankara Nethralaya and Charnock Hospital. Several shopping cum entertainment destinations nearby are Axis Mall, City Centre New Town, DLF Galleria and Aquatica Water Park.

Nearby employment hubs

New Town is a developing employment zone in Kolkata along with Salt Lake Sector V. Both New Town and Sector V, are known for having several business centres and IT parks such as DLF IT Park 1 & 2, Unitech Infospace, Candor Techspace, TCS - Gitanjali Park and Ecospace Business Park. These office hubs boast presence of several key multinational companies (MNCs) including IBM, Capegemini, Cognizant, TCS, Genpact, HCL, Accenture, Tech Mahindra and Ericsson, among others.
